Example of a Chubby installed in your fireplace.

The quickest way to install a Coal Stove Chubby is to put it on your fireplace hearth and vent it into the fireplaces flue.

To do this:

  1. Reach up into the damper area and locate the cotter pin at the end of the damper opening rod. Remove the cotter pin and open the damper close off plate untill it lays back on its own frame for safe storage while you use your stove.

  2. Measure the area to be closed off (below the existing damper assembly which stays in place) and create a pattern out of cardboard. Also visually locate where you will create your 6" hole for the Chubbys flue pipe to go through.

  3. Have a sheet metal shop make your pattern out of sheet metal for you to lag screw into the mortar joints below the damper (anywhere above the fireplaces steel header out of site, but below the damper assembly).

  4. Install the new damper close off, after you put your 6" flue pipe through the old damper assembly and up into the existing tan clay flue liner above the fireplaces smoke shelf.

  5. Hire a chimney sweep to do it instead.
